This is the accompanying website for Past Sounds, a book about the sonata idea of classical music in the 18th and 19th centuries. The instrumental sonata is one of the great formal frameworks of western music: it dominated the concert repertoire in symphonies, concertos, chamber music and solo sonatas for some 250 years.
To simplify this vast field Past Sounds singles out “sonatas” for piano trio - piano, violin and ‘cello. The audio clips on this website reproduce the sound of the notated music examples which illustrate the text throughout the book.
Past Sounds was published by Austin Macauley Publishers in 2022. Copies may be found in a number of academic and music libraries.
